This is session six of six for the series titled Literacy Projects for Adolescent English Learners

NOTE: While we recommend that you attend all sessions of the workshop series to meet the learning objectives, each workshop can be attended as a standalone. Full members will also have access to view the recordings on demand and earn up to six continuing education credits.

Workshop Description:
News broadcasts can be used in creative and interesting ways to engage English Learners and help them discover what is happening in their communities as well as around the world. Join Shelly Terrell as she shares how to use free, education-friendly broadcasting tools to spark student engagement, including scaffolds, supports, and strategies to help students complete their projects. Participants will also have an opportunity to access done-for-you templates to create their own newscast project that they can immediately use with their students.

Learning Objectives:
  • Evaluate a variety of free, education-friendly broadcasting tools appropriate for adolescent English Learners in grades 4-12

  • Develop scaffolds, supports, and strategies to help English Learners complete their own newscast projects

  • Create a content-specific newscast project for English Learners that enhances the four skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing


  • Special Technology Instructions: Participants will need access to an internet device and a non-school, personal Google account. SimpleK12’s Google Classroom will be utilized for the interactive and hands-on components of this workshop.

    Assessment: Participants will create a content-specific newscast project to demonstrate their understanding of the workshop objectives and reflect on their learning.
