Workshop Description:
Comics offer a wide range of opportunities for English Learners because they are engaging and encourage them to explore vocabulary, summarize information, and contextualize information they have learned in a creative way. Join Shelly Terrell as she shares how to use free, education-friendly comic creation tools to inspire student creativity, including scaffolds, supports, and strategies to help students complete their projects. Participants will also have an opportunity to access done-for-you templates to create their own comics project that they can immediately use with their students.

Learning Objectives:
  • Evaluate a variety of free, education-friendly comic creation tools appropriate for adolescent English Learners in grades 4-12

  • Develop scaffolds, supports, and strategies to help English Learners complete their own comics projects

  • Create a content-specific comics project for English Learners that enhances the four skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing

  • Special Technology Instructions: Participants will need access to an internet device and a non-school, personal Google account. SimpleK12ís Google Classroom will be utilized for the interactive and hands-on components of this workshop.

Assessment: Participants will create a content-specific comics project to demonstrate their understanding of the workshop objectives and reflect on their learning.
