Net Smart: How to Thrive Online

How can we use digital media so that we become empowered participants rather than passive consumers; grounded, well-rounded people rather than multitasking neurotics? In this Net Smart webinar, join noted lecturer, author, blogger, and digital pioneer Howard Rheingold as he shares how to use social media intelligently, humanely, and, above all, mindfully Mindful use of digital media means thinking about what we are doing and cultivating an ongoing inner inquiry into how we want to spend our time. In this webinar, Howard outlines and explores five fundamental digital literacies that will help us do this: attention, participation, collaboration, critical consumption of information (or "crap detection"), and network smarts. If we combine our individual efforts wisely, it could produce a more thoughtful society: countless small acts like publishing a Web page or sharing a link could add up to a public good that enriches everybody. Howard Rheingold is the author of a variety of articles and books, including Tools For Thought, Virtual Reality, The Virtual Community, Smart Mobs, and his upcoming release, Net Smart: How to Thrive Online. Credited with inventing the term "virtual community," Howard has lectured at Stanford, UC Berkeley's School of Information, and De Montfort University in the UK.
