Sharon Baillie

Sharon Baillie is a National Board Certified teacher at Burgettstown Middle/High School with 30 years of teaching experience. She holds a Bachelor's degree from Ohio University in Home Economics Education and Consumer Services and a Master's degree from Drexel University in Human Behavior and Development, as well as a Reading Specialist certification and additional course work in nutrition. Sharon was the 2010 PA Family and Consumer Sciences Teacher of the Year, 2011 AAFCS National Teacher of the Year, and winner of the 2013 PA Ag in the Classroom Award from the Pennsylvania Farm Bureau. She is an experienced grant writer, having received over $88,000 for her department over four years. Her department has a PC lab, an iPad lab, interactive whiteboards, and digital cameras, as well as convection ovens, induction burners, digital scales and a greenhouse – all obtained with grants.

Q & A with Sharon Baillie

If you weren't in education, what do you think you'd be doing and why?

Owning and operating a sewing and fabric store. I really enjoy sewing and love working with adults learning to sew.

When you were a kid, you wanted to be a ______? Why?

I wanted to be an Interior Designer. My father worked in home construction and I enjoyed going to the job sites with him.

What's your idea of happiness?

Being with my family and enjoying our time together.

What are your favorite books and authors?

Jennifer Chiaverini, Elm Creek Quilts series and her history books.

The teacher who had the biggest impact on me and why:

Lois Pearson - I went back to grad school wanting out of education, and she helped me see what I really liked about teaching by having me be her grad assistant and supervise student teachers.

If you were dictator and had total control, tomorrow education would:

Education would be free for all as long as they wanted to go and without financial resource limits.

If you could live anywhere other than where you are, it would be:

I would like to live in Washington DC or Orlando. I really like all there is to do in both places.

The biggest problem with K-12 education is:

Financial limits and time restrictions

Do you have a motto you live by?

You can do anything you put your mind to.

I've always wanted to visit:

Disney Paris and Tokyo Disney

What are your most treasured possessions?

Earrings given to me by my mom and my George C bear

If you never had to worry about making money, what would you do?

Travel more

What's the best piece of advice someone ever gave you?

Give teaching a second chance.
