The mistake-friendly Classroom

Hi,

With this pandemic going on, I've noticed that students keep making the same mistakes they did previous years. Do you think we should correct them all the time, give them extra activities or just mark the mistakes only once?

I've been wondering this as it is supposed that "we learn from mistakes".

I have seen this same phenomena occurring in my classroom. I am sure that the increased stress level for everyone may account for some of these repeated mistakes and I take that into account. I think the philosophy this year has been that we are just trying to survive. I do wonder how this will impact future educational goals though.

Hi! Thanks for replying! I guess that with summer vacation on your door, you will all be more relaxed. Here in Argentina, we will have 15 days for our winter break in July and I am really looking forward to having it! It's been demanding and exhausting, especially when students don't do a thing even if we do our best! Smiles, Maria :)

My issue is that students don't seem to "care" or notice if I mark the mistakes. They look at the score at the top and move on. We can't learn from what we don't know or acknowledge. May experiment putting scores in other locations so students have to look at what has been marked before finding the score.

I feel the same way as you state here. I never thought of placing the grade somewhere else and not the usual area. I also read about students placing their number given out at the start of the year instead of name and having their peers give feedback along with the teacher before even giving a grade. It is time consuming but also needed for students to learn from I feel. It is not all about the grade as it seems we have made education through these years.
