Hello all,

I'm struggling to find a balance in my classroom for parent contacts and effective discipline. (No, I am not mean to any students, and I do not have favorites). I began my teaching career 7 years ago, and during that time I have taught every single grade k-12 in a variety of subjects including: 6th-8th ELA, 5th Science and Social Studies, 2nd Grade all subjects, 4th grade ELA and social studies, public speaking, and ACT prep. It is very hard to transition between these age groups, and I'm needing advice on how to engage parents in their student's learning, as well as effective discipline techniques for kindergarten students. Our school does not allow public behavior charts, and I've tried class DoJo with mixed results. The students respond, but parents do not engage with it. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hello, have you tried a reward system for positive behaviors in your elementary grades? I know all young students enjoyed super heroes stickers, give it a try.

Here is a link that helps describe Love & Logic. I recommend picking up the book. It can also address the parent engagement too.

What about a reward system that is something they can earn as a class? Like a marble jar? Marbles put in the jar for positive attributes shown. When the jar is filled, the whole class gets a pizza party or ice cream?

I love your tips. I will use them with my lunchbunch when school restarts.

My 3rd grade teammate and I started using Class Dojo back in January, mainly as a positive support for our classroom management. Parents are included and can see when their child receives a positive feedback comment from us. It was a lifesaver for us. Now that we are home and teaching, we are using Class Dojo to reach our families. Students are making videos reading to us. It has been great!
